GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) is planning to spend approximately Rs 8500 crore to double the passenger capacity in the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Hyderabad, India.

The expense aims to handle 50 million passengers per annum (MPPA) from the existing 25 MPPA. This will also help in upgrading various facilities including new pre-paid auto-taxi booth, parallel taxiways, taxi lanes, rest room for auto-taxi, waiting rooms, etc.

The airport was originally constructed to cater to the needs of approximately 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA). The total number of passengers in the existing Terminal 1 (T1) rose by 17 percent from 18.3 million passengers in 2017–18 to 21.4 million passengers in 2018–19.

GHIAL had filed an application to the Expert Evaluation Committee (EAC) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) seeking environmental clearance to enlarging the airport ability to 50 MPPA.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) also explained that the airport doesn’t need extra land for its planned expansion of these facilities since it has already 5,495 acres of property.

If the expansion plan program is accepted, the project will likely be finished in around six years. It will also create new job opportunities for more than 5,000 local residents (direct employment) and, in addition, to double the number of indirect jobs.

The expansion plan involves building another terminal (T2), along with upgrading the current terminal (T1), and raising the capacity of their cargo terminal and related warehouses to cater to 5.75 LTPA capacity.

In April 2019, GMR has raised $300m investment to expand the airport.
